Non-dual therapy is a unique holistic approach that helps people to release mental and emotional burdens, to understand more deeply and accurately the needs and aspects of their personality, to fulfill their potential, and to live a healthier life. Unlike traditional therapeutic or psychotherapeutic approaches, it works with all three manifested aspects of a person: the mental, emotional, and physical layers.
Our mental, emotional, and physical world is made up of changing thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. They interact with one another and shape our perception, our views, and our experience. When our thoughts and feelings are unpleasant, we tend to try to control them, resist them, suppress them, or cover them up with something else. In doing so, we create states of inner resistance and deep self-rejection. This is how we come to experience ourselves through non-acceptance and a lack of understanding.
We feel this state as inner tension or pressure. It may show up as simple dissatisfaction, inner conflict, stress, anxiety, or low mood. We react to it in many different ways, depending on our individual and learned abilities and capacity. These range from heightened self-control and rationalization, through trying to talk ourselves into things, to excessive activity, compulsive behavior, or withdrawal. In this respect, it hardly matters whether we bind ourselves with discipline, analyze, explain, or run away. Trying to convince ourselves, or be convinced by others, to accept ourselves, or trying to think our way to real self-understanding, is not only unnatural but, above all, impossible. That is why such efforts never end.
Internal tension and conflict are manifestations of duality, where one part of us experiences something and the other tries to cope with it. From this perspective arises the term Non-Dual Therapy, which helps achieve a state of natural balance free from inner contradictions through deeper self-understanding.
If we don’t look deeper beneath the surface and understand ourselves better, our tendencies to be in conflict with ourselves will persist. In Non-Dual Therapy, the traditional therapeutic approach, which is based on conversation, is used solely to help the client become aware of what is stressful, conflicting, or repressed.
In the second phase, the work is already grounded in non-dual insight and experience. The client is guided within their own direct experience so that they can recognize the layers of their feelings and move through them without suppressing them, all the way to the root of their problem. It is like peeling an onion: layer by layer, the person gradually gets deeper, to the core of the matter. In this phase I also work with bodily sensations, which may or may not arise during therapy. These sensations are the body’s somatic response to the mental and emotional process taking place. There is no touch from the therapist; the client simply describes them briefly. Deeply suppressed aspects first show up on the physical level. Only gradually, as resistance dissolves, do they come through further, and we can become aware of them as feelings and thoughts.
In the third phase, the client is guided to become free of the problem in a natural way that comes from their own genuine understanding. The client gains their own insight into the situation, which gives them confidence and frees them from doubt. The therapist can help clarify and name things, but the insight and the freedom from the problem are the client’s own. In this way, a more whole person takes shape. They are free of inner conflict, discrimination, self-rejection, and self-destruction, which in the course of therapy have been transformed into understanding and into creative and unifying capacities.
Subsequent life decisions based on such understanding allow us to direct our energy in the desired direction, without being scattered in constant internal conflict, negative and contradictory thought patterns, and doubts. We begin to live rather than merely survive.
No amount of analysis, explanation, or advice can go deep enough to touch the root of the problem. True liberation from a mental or emotional issue must be spontaneous and arise from deep understanding. Everything else, no matter how well-intentioned, is merely opinion and judgment, but not reality itself or the act of liberation. This is why we often say, “I know, but I still can’t help myself.” The reality is that we don’t know enough, we don’t know all the layers of the onion that cover the core of the problem, and that onion is ours; we must peel it ourselves, as both the problem and the solution lie within us.
